A Remarkable Career in English Country House Decoration

This week, I had the privilege of spending time with Imogen Taylor of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler. At ninety-nine, she remains an extraordinary presence in the world of interior decoration. Her stories, honesty and spirit offered an unforgettable reminder of why the English country house tradition continues to inspire.
For those unfamiliar with her work, Imogen Taylor spent more than five decades at Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler. Trained by John Fowler himself, she became a quiet force behind the studio’s longevity and success. A guardian of layered, comfortable country house interiors, her influence remains significant.
At ninety-nine, her memory, wit and clarity are astonishing. She spoke generously about the realities of decoration, the importance of restraint and the enduring power of a room that evolves over time.

Wisdom, Humour and the Spirit to Keep Learning
Her advice was not what I expected, but it was astute and honest, and I will hold it closely. What struck me most was not only her contribution to decoration but her spirit. Her positivity and energy are undimmed. A reminder to remain optimistic and open to learning throughout a lifetime.
Although she spoke often about feeling lucky, it was clear that her curiosity, presence and attitude created many of those opportunities.

The Ramsbury Manor Foundation
My thanks also to John Benson for such a special introduction. We are fortunate for the work he is doing for the Ramsbury Manor Foundation. His research has documented and preserved interiors created by John Fowler and Imogen Taylor, ensuring future generations can study and enjoy them. His insight into their work at Ramsbury Manor is invaluable.
Continuing the Conversation
For those interested in learning more, John Benson’s next talk at Ramsbury Village Hall will take place on Monday 24 November, exploring the country house style and the influence of John Fowler. Tickets are available here.
